7 Ideal Plants for a City Balcony (Even North-Facing Ones)

Living in an apartment doesn't mean you can't have a green space. Here are 7 robust, attractive, and easy-to-care-for plants, perfect for a city balcony — even a north-facing one.

Criteria for a Successful Urban Balcony

In the city, your plants must contend with several constraints: wind, pollution, limited space, and sometimes irregular watering. Forget fragile plants and opt for resilient varieties that forgive neglect.

1. Oleander: The Star of the Sunny Balcony

Ideal for south/south-west facing balconies. Resists heat, blooms from May to September, tolerates wind. A beautiful potted olive tree also works very well if you prefer a Mediterranean feel.

2. Lavender: Fragrance and Welcome Insects

An emblematic plant of the South, lavender requires little water, blooms from June to August, and attracts bees. A must for a "holiday" balcony. Prefer compact varieties like Lavandula angustifolia 'Hidcote'.

3. Fargesia Bamboo: A Green Privacy Screen

The non-spreading fargesia (be careful, not phyllostachys which spreads!) is perfect in a large container to create a natural screen. It grows quickly, stays green all year round, and won't damage your balcony.

4. Aromatic Herbs in Planters

Rosemary, thyme, sage, chives: Mediterranean herbs love well-exposed balconies and save you money on groceries. Moderate watering, pot with good drainage is essential.

5. Fuchsia: The Star of the Shaded Balcony

Do you have a north-facing or less sunny balcony? Fuchsia is your ally. Spectacular cascading blooms from May to October, tolerates partial shade very well. Water regularly in summer.

6. Heuchera: Colorful Foliage All Year Round

Its purple, caramel, or lemon leaves remain beautiful even in winter. Perfect for structuring a partially shaded balcony. Very low maintenance, cold-resistant.

7. Ornamental Grasses: Movement and Lightness

Stipa, carex, fescue: grasses add movement with the wind, fill the space, and require almost zero maintenance. Ideal for an effortless contemporary look.

The Right Pot, The Right Potting Soil

Golden rule: good drainage. Always put clay balls at the bottom and choose a pot with drainage holes. Special Mediterranean plant or balcony flower potting soil works in 90% of cases. In summer, slate or flax mulch limits evaporation and keeps the roots cool.
