How to choose the perfect lighting for your balcony: complete guide

A well-lit balcony promises cozy evenings, extended meals, and a snug corner where you love to linger. Here's how to choose and install lighting that truly transforms your outdoor space.

1. Define the ambiance before choosing fixtures

Even before looking at products, ask yourself the right question: what do you want to do on your balcony in the evening? Dine with friends, read quietly, host a romantic aperitif? The lighting should meet a specific use:

  • Intimate ambiance: warm string lights (2200–2700K), LED lanterns, candle holders
  • Functional lighting: adjustable spotlights, wall sconces, motion-sensing floodlights
  • Decorative and festive: solar string lights, paper lanterns, LED candles

2. Opt for multiple light sources

The most common mistake: a single large ceiling light that overpowers the space. For a professional look, layer at least 3 levels:

  • Soft general lighting (string lights or sconces)
  • Accent lighting on key areas (table, bench, prominent plants)
  • Decorative accents (candle holders, mini-lanterns) for warmth

This "layered" approach is used by all outdoor designers and is what differentiates a Pinterest-worthy balcony from a mundane one.

3. Prioritize solar and rechargeable LEDs

On a balcony, access to an outdoor electrical outlet is rare. Two simple solutions:

  • Solar lights: no cables, no electricity bill, 6 to 10 hours of autonomy after a sunny day
  • USB rechargeable LED lamps: perfect for the table, recharge indoors during the day

Always check the protection rating: IP44 minimum for a covered balcony, IP65 if exposed to rain.

4. Respect the color temperature

For a cozy balcony, stick to warm to very warm white (2200–2700K). Absolutely avoid cool white (4000K+) which creates a sterile atmosphere. A 2200K string light will give that amber glow reminiscent of a candle flame – the secret of stylish restaurant terraces.

5. Don't forget your neighbors

In an apartment, be mindful of flashing or overly powerful lights that illuminate your neighbor's interior. Orient your spotlights downwards or towards your plants, and prefer steady lights over flashing effects.
